A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
