Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
